Book Royalty

I've wanted to read this one for awhile, but then I was on TikTok and there was one of those "Pause and the book you land on is what you should read next" videos.  I landed on this book, so when it was time to choose my next audio book and this was available, I felt it was meant to be.  I'm actually very happy the way it worked out because I ended up loving this book SO much!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

This book was SO amazing.  I listened on audio and it was very difficult to pause it when I had real life things to do.

I love that there were so many social issues addressed in the telling of this story.  Not only did it deal with race, but also social class and sexuality.  There were some very backward rules in this town regarding prom and who could attend and how.  It's a very real problem that rules like these can cause people to feel they need to hide who they really are in order to succeed.

Liz ran for Prom Queen for a good reason, she wasn't going for popularity or trying to defeat a "mean girl."  This made her more real, in my opinion.  In addition to being a person of color, she had to deal with the loss of a parent, a sibling who is sick and some issues with friendships.  She had a lot of adult type pressures on her shoulders from a young age.  I found this led to a unique voice in a young adult novel.  Add to that her sexuality and the struggles with hiding that, Liz was a complex and diverse character.

Earning the respect and the support of her classmates was probably the best part for me.  It's nice when we can see a world that isn't all bad and people who aren't all close minded.  I think it was a very powerful ending as well.  This is definitely going in my list of favorite reads for the year!

Castle Mountain Lodge

I've found another romance series to read!  I got book one as a freebie, and I did enjoy it.  I think I'm going to end up really liking this author as I read more.  I feel like she has popped up in my e-mails with freebies before, too.  So, I'm going to have to search my Nook and Kindle libraries for more books by her.  I do have a tendency to one-click often!

Unexpected Gifts by Elena Aitken

It's been awhile since I've read a Christmas-y book around the holidays.  In all honesty, I didn't know that it was going to be set in Christmas time when I began, but I loved that it was.  What a great way to put you in the Holiday spirit!

Andi is a character that I feel like every reader will empathize with.  She's been through something that's horrible and heart breaking and the person who should have been there wasn't.  Colin is the typical guy who thinks he's not relationship type, but might be more than he realizes.  I loved the chance meeting, the forced proximity, and just the chemistry between the two.  Even more than that, I loved the challenge Colin gave himself to help Andi learn to love Christmas again, even when he didn't know what made her stop.

There were times over the course of this book that I laughed, but also times where I teared up a bit.  And overall I was left with a feeling of contentment.  I think the story went exactly where it needed to go and it was effortless in its flow.

I hadn't read this author before, but I already am excited to read the 2nd book in the Castle Mountain Lodge series.

Back in Sweet Pea

As much as I loved this book, it took me forever to write the review.  The main problem was, the things I was most excited about and loved the most were difficult to put into words without giving spoilers.  And I, personally, hate spoilers in reviews.  I want to know how you felt about the book or how the book made you feel and vague things you might have liked or disliked, but not specifics and even when I tried to be vague, it seemed too spoilerish.  In any case, here is my review of the 2nd book in the Sweet Pea Flings series.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sneaking Around With Slade by Piper James
If you love a good, cute (but also spicy,) contemporary romance, I'm convinced that you can't go wrong with Piper James.  Every book is fun to read, emotional, and full of heat.
If you've read the first book in the Sweet Pea Flings series, then you've already met both Saylor and Slade in passing.  And you also know they have a secret.  I, personally, am a huge fan of the 'brother's best friend' romance trope, but this story adds a bit of an age gap as well.  Sometimes that can be a turn off for me, but I found that it wasn't in this book.
What I loved most about this book was how Ford reacted to the news.  I found it made me love him as a character even more than I already did.  I also can't get over how creative this author is to make sure each book in each series ends up tying into the previous ones.  For me, it makes the reading of these series even more enjoyable.
I am already looking forward to the next book in this series, in addition to anything Ms. James writes in the future.
Can you say YUM?
I both love and hate books that include recipes.  I don't need more reasons to make and eat tasty food, you know?  But let me tell you, there were parts of this book that had my mouth watering!  More than that though, I really loved the main characters.  I found she was so well developed and an enjoyment to "listen to" as she told her story.  And I know I've said before that I enjoy reading contemporary fiction about other cultures.  That was another big reason to love this book.  I highly recommend!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

I listened to this book on Audio using the Libby app.  I have to say that I really enjoyed the narrator.  I think it really enhances the book if the narration is done well.

I loved learning about different cultures in this book.  While it primarily takes place in Philadelphia, there are many references to Puerto Rico as well as a trip to Spain.  Getting little lessons about other places and people while reading fiction is a very cool thing.

Emoni is a character who has been through things that a lot of girls her age have not and so has a very different mental voice than other teens her age might.  I found the story being told from her thoughts to be so intriguing, especially when the more "normal" teenage side would show itself.  But she is a very mature teenager due to her life circumstances and that shows up in her narration.

The other thing about this book that I truly loved, was the chapter titles and the little recipes thrown in throughout the book.  It made the story a little more fun and made me a little hungry as well.

I think fans of contemporary young adult books, fans of books with food or cooking in them, and stories about overcoming challenges are going to love this book.

Nesta's Story

I have loved the journey this series has taken me on, but I'm so upset that the next book isn't out yet!  OMG I'm so impatient!  Anyway, here's my review for probably my favorite book in the series so far.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas
Here's me over here, reading these books because TikTok goes crazy for them, right?  And then here's me realizing this is the last published book in the series and now I have to wait.  Like, what?  TikTok what have you done to me?  Ok so that was my fun way of warning you, if you are reading this to be aware that the next book isn't out yet!  There are also a few trigger warnings in this one.  If you react badly to descriptions of abuse, you might be triggered.  There are also mentions of rape.
Ok, now that I've gotten through my warnings, I can tell you that this was an amazing book.  I think I liked it better than the previous three to be honest!  I love Feyre and Rhys, don't get me wrong, but somehow I connected more with Nesta.  Which shocked me because I didn't much care for her in the other books.  Getting inside her head, however, was a totally different story.  Once I could see things from her point of view, I realized that I'm much more like Nesta than Feyre.
Another thing I really and truly loved about this book was the relationship between Cassian and Nesta.  I think the way he supported her and was so patient as she worked through her issues and faced her demons was impressive and what everyone should aspire to when dealing with someone who has had trauma in their lives.
And finally, I really enjoyed the friendships that Nesta made with Gwyn and Amery.  Those connections through their various trauma and recovery reminded me so much of all the strong female friendships I've had in my life and how important that is.  Their support for each other and lifting each other up made this book so much more wonderful for me.
Late October Reading
I pulled out this book and the one I read previously to read for the week of Halloween and then I just didn't read as much as I thought I would  So here I am nearing the end of November and have finally finished books I chose for October reading.  It's ok though, I'm definitely a mood reader and just because I didn't finish them in time for Halloween doesn't mean I didn't enjoy reading them.  I am, however, excited to move back to my contemporary romances!
***************
The Color of Fear by Billy Phillips and Jenny Nissenson
If you are a fan of darker fairy tale retellings, you will probably enjoy this book.  Was it written for a younger audience, yes, but did I still enjoy it even though I'm in my 40s?  Also yes!
I loved the imagery in this book and how there was a deeper meaning behind the journey that Caitlin takes.  I think the descriptions of the characters was excellent, and the author did a great job of bringing the reader along on the voyage through not only the descriptions of the characters, but also the scenery and events.
The other thing I really enjoyed was the encompassment of all different types of fairy tales.  From Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and the rest, to Jack and the Beanstalk and Alice in Wonderland... all of the childhood favorites were covered.  In addition to that, the authors who created these characters were mentioned as well, which I found to be a great homage to them and a testament to their longevity.
There was a cliffhanger at the end, and to be honest when I bought the book (at a Scholastic Book Fair) I wasn't aware it was a series.  I will have to look into finding the next book.
Freebies for the Win
I love getting freebies on my Nook and Kindle.  I found Evelyn Adams on my Nook in some freebies I'd downloaded ages ago.  Now I'm very excited because I've found another romance author who I know I will enjoy pretty much anything I read by her!  Have any of you found new authors this way?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Feels Like Home by Evelyn Adams

I was disappointed with myself for reading the first book in the spin off series before I read this one.  However, as it turns out, it's not necessary to read this first series before reading the spin off.  Each series can stand alone.

I loved how this book showed how cruel some people can be, and at the same time showed how your background and circumstances don't get to determine the outcome of your life.  It's powerful to me, when a main character can show the other how much they are worth in spite of their perceived flaws.  We all think the worst of ourselves at times and reading a romance like this one can give us hope that the right person will see past what we hate about ourself.

There was on character, other than the one I'm sure we were meant to dislike, that I really despised and I'm wondering if there will be a redeeming point for him in the future of this series, as he seems to have a close connection with the main family.  I was shocked and disappointed in his actions and even at the end of the book, I didn't like him much.

This being the second book I've read by this author, I can say with certainty that I will be reading more.  I love the emotions she puts into the books and how much depth there is to her characters.  Her writing style is engaging and I found myself drawn in from the very first page.

The Name of the Pig

 So, I started this book from Prime Reading and while the title is cute and clever for the story, it's also the name of a pig in the story (Romeo) and I found that to be quite funny.  I'm really loving RomCom and Contemporary Romances right now, so that's a lot of what the reviews I'll be doing are about.  If you happen to not like those, don't fear, I'm a mood reader and I'm sure to phase on to something new soon!

*************

Not My Romeo by Ilsa Madden-Mills

I borrowed this book with Prime Reading and I enjoyed it very much!  I loved the idea of a mistaken identity leading to a love story.  Of course, there has to be some stumbling blocks along the way.  Like the person not telling the other that they aren't who they think they are!

I think the fact that Jack is so vulnerable in spite of his status makes him that much more swoon-worthy.  I really liked that he wasn't some cocky jock who thought the world revolved around him until the right girl stepped in.  He already had flaws and didn't realize his own worth.  I also enjoyed the small town life of Elena and her family and friends.  Coupled with the big time status of Jack, it made for a really cute story.

I hadn't read any of this author before, though several had been on my wish list, so I'm very glad to have found this on Prime Reading so that I could give it a try.  I'll definitely be looking more into this author.

Off to Sweet Pea!

I love when I find an author that I really love.  It's become quite obvious that I'm going to enjoy anything written by Ms. Piper James (aka Wendi Wilson.)  I found this author on TikTok, so thankful to have found my niche over there.  I can't wait to get started on some of her other genres, but I'm enthralled with her contemporary romances.  The following is my review for book one in her newest series!

*********************

Fooling Around With Ford by Piper James

I was so surprised and excited to find out that Piper James had a new book coming out!  I'm slightly embarrassed to say that it took me way too long to recognize the connection between this book and the previous Red River Romps series.  I absolutely love that this author chooses to connect her series in this way.  It makes it so fun for the reader to feel like they already know some of the characters and have been involved in this world for so long.

In the first Sweet Pea Flings we meet Dakota's sister and she's pretty much at her lowest.  The amazing people and atmosphere in this town change her perspective, and obviously Ford had something to do with it as well.  As much as I loved the main characters, the side characters really shine through in Ms. James' writing.  I think it's a large reason that readers keep coming back to her books.

If you enjoy a good contemporary romance with a bit of spice thrown in.  Or if you've enjoyed any of Piper James previous books or series, I think you will truly love Fooling Around with Ford!  As for myself, I can't wait to see who the second book in the series will be about!

Back with the Bridgertons!

I've been listening to this series on Audiobook from a combination of the Libby and Hoopla apps.  I've had the 8th book and the Happily Ever After collection on hold for so long!  But I kept getting the collection before book 8 in the series and I didn't want to listen to it until I'd read On the Way to the Wedding, so I kept delaying my hold.  FINALLY, I was able to listen to it, and while listening the collection was available again.  Luckily, that means I get to move directly on to the final book in the series now that I've finished book 8.  And then I guess I only have to wait for the next season of the show!  lol  Do any of you put books on hold if you're really wanting to read them?  Or do you just go out and buy them?  I wish I had the money to just buy whatever book I want to read, but that's not always possible is it?  Thank goodness for libraries and apps like Libby and Hoopla!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn
 I've been on a wait list for this book for quite some time, so I'm very happy to have finally been able to listen to it!  Gregory's story had more intrigue and action than most of the others, and I was very pleased to have some new characters to meet and enjoy.  I admit to feeling a bit ambivalent about Hermione at first, but I grew to like her almost as much as the main character, Lucy.
I do miss Lady Whistledown's part in the stories, but I also appreciate the direction the series took after she was unmasked.  The drama, gossip and scandal is still there, just told in different ways.  And the drama and scandal are aplenty in this book!  I was at the literal edge of my seat at one point.
As with most of the series, I was able to listen to a second epilogue at the end of this audiobook.  I have to admit to being brought to tears during this part of the book, and I find that the story was enhanced because of it.  I do love getting little updates and sneak peeks into the lives of the characters after the initial story is over.
I'm somewhat sad to have reached the end of the series, but I do have the collection of 2nd epilogues (to read any I may have missed along the way) to read, and I intend to!  Fans of historical romance, the rest of the series, or the TV adaptation are sure to love this book.
Fairy Tales Reimagined
I love retellings of fairy tales and this one is great because it incorporated so many of them.  There are a lot of 2 star reviews for this one, but I think that you have to go into a book with a certain expectation.  I got this book from an elementary book fair, so I knew it was going to be simpler and geared towards a younger audience and I reviewed and rated it with that in mind.  A book for younger audiences isn't going to be as detailed as a book for adults.  I rated this book 4 stars because I think that it was executed nicely and that readers will enjoy it.
***************
Dead Upon a Time by Elizabeth Paulson
 I picked this book up ages ago at a Scholastic book fair at my kids' school.  It's been sitting on my shelf ever since until I decided to read a couple of "spooky season" books this month.  I'm glad I finally picked it up, as it was a very cute read and an interesting take on a fairy tale retelling.
In this story, all of the fairy tales are linked and the "bad guy" is the same for all of them.  The heroes in the story are an unlikely pair of outcasts who end up leaning on each other as they try to save a princess, defeat evil and lead a rescue mission.  I really enjoyed how all of the various fairy tales we all know kept popping up throughout the story.
In the end, not only is the villain a shock, but there are other surprises for the main characters as well.  I think it was a great retelling story and that readers of all ages will enjoy it.  It does seem geared for a younger YA audience, but as an adult I still really enjoyed it.
What is it about Bullies?
As a kid in Jr. High, I was bullied quite fiercely.  I never in a million years thought I'd like books about bullies turning into romantic interests.  But here I am!  Perhaps it's because my bullies were always female.  Or maybe it's the fact that the bully is often forced to admit their true feelings and things work out for everyone in the end.  Whatever it is, ever since I read my first bully romance, I can't seem to get enough.  (And don't even get me started on if they have a reverse harem in there as well!)  I borrowed Deviant King from Prime Reading, if you have Amazon Prime and aren't taking advantage of this program you're missing out!  The following is my review!
***********
Deviant King by Rina Kent
While this book left me with more questions than answers, I'm so FULLY invested it's not even funny!  I was drawn in from page one and by the last page, I was practically salivating for answers and more of the story.  Needless to say, I can not wait to get my hands on book two of this series.
I never thought I would be a person who enjoyed bully romance, but the more I read, the more I enjoy it.  I think the overall tension between the two main characters enhances the romance when it finally comes about.  In this story, Elsa "Frozen" has been tormented since day one, though Aidan pretty much ignores her.  But when these two collide it's epic and powerful.  I like their dynamic for the most part, but there were some times when I found consent to be dubious.  I also feel like there is more going on with some of the side characters than we really get to see in this initial book.  I'm curious to see what might come of those tensions as well.
There is a definite cliffhanger at the end of this book, which is one of the reasons why I am so eager to get my hands on book two.  Some huge questions are lingering in my head and it's both frustrating and intriguing.
Slowing Down
Well, I'm out of quarantine and back to work.  That means my reading is slowing down again.  I'm a little bummed, but also so glad to be over the worst of the Covid and back to somewhat normal.  I did manage to finish two books in the past week, however, so here are the reviews!  Both were solid 4 star reads, though I did enjoy Ana and Zak a tad bit more than Falling Free.
**********
 Falling Free by Evelyn Adams
I want to start off by giving a slight trigger warning.  The female MC is in a relationship at the start of the book.  I really don't like reading about cheating, so I want to make it clear that no one cheats in this book.
I loved the way the relationship between the two main characters blossomed and how supportive Amanda's family was throughout the whole book.  It really made it clear who she should be with when the family instantly likes him.  And Michael seems to be a really great guy.  He's interested in learning more about Amanda, he enjoys doing things she enjoys with her and isn't upset when she's better at things than he is.  A case of insta-lust turns into a real connection between the two.
I became aware a little ways into the book that this is a spin off series to a series that I haven't read.  That didn't distract from the story, but I do want to go read the original series now before I continue with this one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak by Brian Katcher

I found this book at the Dollar Tree and it looked really cute so I picked it up.  I wasn't expecting how deep it would be in the relationships with the main characters and their parents.  Ana is down right terrified that one mistake will get her disowned from her parents.  Zak is dealing with the loss of a parent and the remaining parent moving on.  Neither situation is going to be easy, but somehow, they are able to show each other how to make things better.

Both Ana and Zak misjudge each other a time or two, but when the chips are down they really have each other's backs.  I also really enjoyed the setting.  I've never been to a con before, but I feel like it's something I would love, and living vicariously through these characters was pretty great.

I would like to see more of what happened with Ana and her parents, as well as with Zak and his stepdad and what his future might hold, however, I really love the way the book ended as well.  It was full of possibility and I feel like the reader can sort of take their own imaginings and decide for themselves how the rest of that all turns out.

More COVID Reading

As I stayed quarantined, and recovering from Covid, I read a LOT more than I anticipated!  So, here's another LONG blog post with all the books I finished up while trapped in bed.  Luckily, I am out of quarantine now, back to work, and while that might mean a bit less reading... it also means the return of a little sanity!  I was missing being social for one, but also, I dearly missed my students at my job.  In any case, here are the reviews of the books I read this past week.  I saved the best for last... it was truly an amazingly stunning book!

***********************************

Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between by Jennifer E. Smith

 I had read this author before and really enjoyed the book, so when I saw this one at a thrift store it was an instant buy for me.

This book is all about first love, leaving for college, big life changes and all of the tough decisions that go along with.  Leaving behind friends and family as you go off to college on your new adventure as an adult is so hard.  The thing that really gets most of us though, is leaving behind our first love.  It can feel like life or death in those moments of just becoming an adult and having to make those decisions that will shape the way our lives will go.  It's heart-wrenching and difficult.

I actually loved Clare's idea of taking her and Aidan around to the spots of all of their best memories in order to help them decide what to do about the future.  It was also a great way for the author to let us know some of the more important parts of their relationship.  I think it also showed the importance of memories and holding on to those good times after the ending of something, whether it's high school, a friendship ending, or moving, or whatever.

This book actually made me tear up a bit.  Which is unusual for a YA book, since I am in my 40s!  But it really brought me back to my own summer after graduation and those big decisions and the people I had to leave behind as I went off to college.   It really is both a joyous and trying time in a young person's life and those feelings, apparently, stay with you!

I loved the second prologue.  I was full of smiles at that!  I recommend this book to anyone in their Senior year of High School, anyone who has recently graduated, or anyone who just enjoys remembering those times.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Flirty Dancing by Jenny McLachlan
I picked up this book at Dollar Tree, and I didn't realize that it was a younger YA or maybe even a middle grade book.  It was very cute though, and I can see how younger readers would really enjoy it.
I loved the relationships Bea had with her family.  It's nice to see a sibling relationship that's so adorable, and where the older sibling doesn't constantly complain about the younger one.  I also really enjoyed Bea's relationship with her grandmother, I am very close with my grandma too and it's nice to see that in books.
I think it's great that Bea gets braver the more she dances with Ollie.  It shows young readers that the more confident they become, the braver they can be.  And when she finally stands up to her bully, I found the way she did so to be classy and show maturity.
Ollie is a great character too.  I like that the "cute boy" character wasn't fooled by the bully character.  He truly sees what's important, rather than being caught up in looks or popularity.  There is a use of the "r word" that could cause a trigger for some.  I will say though, that the characters are upset about the use of the word.  (As was I.)
I think this book would be great for grades 6 through about 10, though older readers might enjoy it as well.
****************
Hopeless Romantic by Julie Capulet
This was a very short, insta-love, spicy romance.  The meet cute was adorable, and I loved the idea of the story.  I wished it was a bit longer though.  I would have liked to get a little more depth into the background of both main characters.
There was a little part that eluded to the story in book two and it really made you want to go read that one.  Pretty smart of the author, the way it was done.
All in all, I think readers who enjoy insta-love and short stories will enjoy this.  The writing was good and the story was super cute.
~~~~~~~~~~~

One Great Lie by Deb Caletti

This book was so beautifully written.  There were several points throughout the book where I had to just stop and re-read a line or paragraph because it spoke to me so deeply.  For example, "Words were forests to explore in your very own room, warm tents to hide in, and magic cloaks that transformed you."  This quote and many others I simply took a picture of with my phone so that I would remember them always.

I loved how there were stories of female writers at the beginning of each chapter.  I learned so much just from these little snippets of information about these authors who have been lost to us over time.  It really spoke to how our society tends to put the male authors up on some sort of pedestal as the ideal of someone brilliant.  It's a sad truth that there are still female authors who feel they must use initials or pseudonyms in order to get the attention their work deserves.

While the main part of the story involves Charlotte's writing and her search to find out about Isabella, the wrong that was done her quickly takes over and I found some very important themes in that.  One main thing is the embarrassment of being taken advantage of.  Even if we know it's not our fault, there's a sense of shame to it, and so often people blame the victim for not seeing what was happening.  I feel like Charlotte had to grow up fast due to what happened to her, but at the same time, it was because of this quick growing up that she was finally able to find her voice, find her past and see into her future.  And I love that she does it in spite of what happened to and to honor her relative.

I've been a fan of Deb Caletti for some time now, but this book just blew me away.  I'm struggling to write this review, because honestly my words will not do this book justice.  It was a beautiful story, written wonderfully, and I'm sure it will stay with me for a long, long time.

COVID Books

That's right, I have the Rona!  I got a positive test result on Sunday and since then can do nothing but lay in bed and read or watch TV.  I've read a Lot of books so far.  Since I'm only at my computer when no one else is home to spread my germies to, I'm just going to put all of my reviews in this one long blog post.

***************************

There's Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon

 Since I loved the first book set in this world so much, I had to read the second.  And now I find out there are some novellas as well, which I am definitely going to look into.

In this story, I really appreciated the author's use of weight and body image as a struggle or an issue for young people to be facing.  I could not stand Sweetie's mom for most of the book, I was very triggered by almost everything she did and said.  I will say though, that she seemed to redeem herself at the end.  In addition to the body image issues, there were also the issues of dating and the cultural differences that Sweetie and Ashish have that other students their age don't necessarily face.

Speaking of Ashish, I found his parents to be amazing.  I think all teenagers hope for parents like that.  I also found their dating ideas and especially the reasons why they chose them to be endearing.  Obviously, if you've read When Dimple Met Rishi, you've sort of met these parents, but you get to really see them in this story.

While the body image issues that Sweetie is dealing with are paramount to the story, so are the breaking up and moving on issues that Ashish is facing.  Learning to be confident under both circumstances plays heavily into this book, and I think it is a very positive story for teens to read when dealing with these things.

I loved the story so much, but I'm also really enjoying learning about this culture and expanding my knowledge in this area.  I think that fans of the first book, fans of Indian culture and stories, as well as fans of adorable YA contemporary romances are going to love this book.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr
Big mistakes in our past can help change and shape us into the person we are today.  This can be either a positive or a negative thing, but in most cases I think it's a little of both.  In this story, the main character, Deanna, has made a major mistake when she was young but is continuously dealing with the fall out from not only her school mates, but her father as well.  Deanna's father is unable to forgive and move on and this causes a lot of tension and heartbreak for the family.  I love that in the story, Deanna and her brother are trying their best to become different people than their father.  There's a lot to be said for forgiveness and being able to move forward after any big mistake or tragedy.
The one big negative I see in this book, other than the fact that the father is so unreasonable, is that neither parent decided to press charges.  As a parent myself reading this book, I simply can't imagine not doing something to show how wrong what happened was and to show my child how much I supported them.
This was a one sitting read for me, and I learned that there is a film version on Netflix that I definitely want to watch.
*****************
The One That I Want by Piper Sheldon
This is the third book in this series and I have to say that I can't even choose a favorite!  I love them all so much.  I love all the characters, and how they are recurring throughout each book.  I adore the strong, powerful female friendships that are involved, but even more than that, I love that the author has included some very strong male friendships as well.
It took me way too long, again, to clue into the inspiration for this book.  I was near the end before it finally clicked and given the title that's a tad embarrassing!  This is sort of like a gender-bent retelling of Grease, but then again not really.  The reason it took so long to make the connection, is that it's also uniquely it's own story.
With both main characters, there are some things they are working on to better themselves and it's so much easier for them to see what the other needs than themselves.  Sanders is dealing with grief and how to handle that in a safe and productive way.  Roxy is dealing with letting go of her past and learning that it's ok to lean on others sometimes.  Roxy and I have that in common, actually.  Through their relationship and realizations of what they truly want out of life, they are able to overcome the obstacles in their path and move forward.
I absolutely loved the "grand gesturing" at the end of the book.  It was so sweet and so true to the characters themselves.  I also adored how supportive all of the friends ended up being.
There is a little side story hinted at throughout the book and since I follow this author on TikTok, I happen to know that we will get that story soon!  Piper Sheldon is a new favorite for me and I can't wait to read the next one!
Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean
If Princess Diaries went to Japan, that would be this book!  Imagine all the struggles that Mia Thermopolis had to endure, but at the same time facing a graduation, learning a whole new language and a new culture.
Izumi finds out in her Senior year that she's actually a royal daughter of Japan.  After finding her father, she accepts an invitation to spend a few weeks in Japan learning about her culture and heritage.  Through not so nice cousins, and some seemingly innocent faux pas, she is torn apart by the tabloids.  Being Japanese-American has always been a struggle for Izumi, but going to Japan makes her think she really doesn't fit in anywhere.
I loved this story, there were some truly laugh out loud moments and also times where I wanted to cry for the princess.  I think every teenager will relate to Izumi, because who among us didn't feel as if they didn't belong when they were a teen?  I also enjoyed all the Japanese culture and the things I learned while reading this book.  I not only learned some Japanese words, but some history that I was previously uninformed of.
I was very excited to see that this is the first in a series and I can't wait for book two to come out!
When You Don't Read the Blurb
I am one of the weirdos who doesn't read the blurb before choosing a book, and often times not even then.  I'm a cover type person and I don't know if that's bad or good.  Sometimes, I truly enjoy taking the ride and being surprised what the story is about.  But in cases like this book, I probably wouldn't have chosen it for my Prime Reading selection if I'd known about the cheating in the book.  And that's definitely a personal thing.  I know many people who might absolutely love this book, and that's ok.  What bothers me isn't going to bother everyone else.  Just like there are things that bother other people that don't bother me.  What are some of the things that turn you off of a book?
************
Come Undone by Jessica Hawkins
While the story was written well, and I loved the sexual tension involved, I'm just not a fan of cheating.  Most things that aren't really my thing, I can look past in books, but cheating isn't one of them and that is the only reason for my three star rating.  When it comes to writing, character development, and plot the book is very well done.  And I've read another book by this author that I truly loved.  I just found it really hard to get through this one due to the cheating aspect.
Culture
I have been stepping outside of the "norm" for my romance and contemporary novel reading and have been seeking out some books that are about people from different cultures than my own.  If you have read something about characters who are not white or maybe not even from America, I would love some suggestions!  This book was wonderful and I loved it, I'm just going to let you get to the review!  But please, drop me some suggestions!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

I really enjoyed this book.  I can't remember if it was on TikTok or some other social media that I saw this book being talked about, but I'm so glad I ended up reading it.  I also had no idea that there were other book in this world.  I'm reading the companion novel about Sweetie now.  The fact that I moved on to the next book so quickly speaks highly for this book and how impressed I was with the author.  I even looked at her GoodReads page to see what else she's written.

I think the meet cute in this story is just adorable, and hilarious.  I literally laughed out loud.  And I like the way the relationship between these two characters progressed so naturally in spite of what their parents tried to do.  I also love how both Dimple and Rishi have something they are truly passionate about, and how they help each other with that aspect of their lives.

I've been really enjoying reading books about people with different cultures than my own.  Not only are they entertaining, but I feel like I'm learning something and opening my eyes to the numerous other ways of life out there.

Favorite Authors

I know we all have our favorite authors, and I'm sure if you read this blog, you can find that Siobhan Davis is one of mine.  I've been a fan since her debut book and I can not get enough of her writing.  There is so much emotion in her books and she really has a way of drawing a reader in.  Her latest book came out this week and here is my review.  By the way, what are some of your favorite authors?

***************

Forbidden to Love by Siobhan Davis

This book was phenomenal!  Filled with drama, intrigue, action, and of course some romantic/sexual tension between the two main characters.  Set in the same world as Condemned to Love, this book shows a mob princess who falls for a "lowly soldier."  The life both are leading prevents them from making their own choices in such matters.

What I love most about this book, and quite honestly any Davis book, is the sheer depth in the characters.  Even secondary and tertiary characters have a complex background and descriptions so that we come to feel we truly know the characters and can see them.  Worlds created like this make it so easy for the reader to simply dive in and feel like they are living the story right along side the characters.  There is so much going on with Natalia and her whole family.  She struggles with what she wants out of life and what her obligations are.  Then there is Leo and he's struggling with the same issues in a different way.

I love the connection that Natalia and Leo have and how their desire leaps off the page, it's that tangible.  Other than the romance, which is superb, there is also a lot of danger, action, and intrigue going on with the families.  True to any mafia romance, I'm guessing, there is some betrayals and underhanded dealings going on that will inevitably end in tragedy.  I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book!

If you enjoy this author, mafia romance, steamy romance, or brother's best friend type stories, this is the book for you!  I also highly recommend the other book in this world, Condemned to Love.

Piper Sheldon

I've been reading the Pipers lately, I guess!  I am so thankful that Ms. Sheldon sent me copies of her books to read.  I'm enjoying them immensely.  I hadn't ever read a book by her before and I'm seeing how big of a mistake that was.  I'm adoring these books and the characters in them.  I'm going to be very sad when the series is over.  The second book was SO good that I immediately began reading the third in the series when I finished.  (So glad I was able to do that due to the generosity of the author.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Treble With Men by Piper Sheldon
I think I liked this second book in the Scorned Women's Society even better than the first, (And I LOVED the first!)  After reading, through a TikTok made by the author, I finally saw how it was inspired by Phantom of the Opera.  I have to admit that I feel foolish for not seeing it before that, but also it made me love it even more.
Both of the main characters in this book have a history that has altered how they behave in front of people.  It's this similarity that I think makes them perfect for each other.  I also love how part of their history is shared.  It almost gives it that second chance romance feel, which I happen to love.
Since this is book two in a series, I have to mention that I love the group of friends in the SWC and I love that we get to basically see an update on the characters in book one.  (If you haven't read it, please do!  They can be read as stand alone but are so much better in order!)  This group of women are all about reclaiming their power, each in their own way and for their own reasons, but reclaiming it all the same through the love and support of each other.  And while there is a romance in each book, I love that the women seem stronger on their own accord and not because of a man or a relationship.
One thing that really stood out to me in this book, is that our mistakes do not get to define us, nor determine our future.  We are able to move past them, learn from them and become better people because of them, but we do not have to continuously punish ourselves for mistakes we've made in our pasts.  It's imperative that we move forward from them.
I have loved these books so much, and have already begun reading book three in the series.  I encourage anyone who loves a good romance with some spice, anyone who loves women reclaiming their power, and anyone who is a fan of Piper Sheldon, to go out and get these books and get reading them!  You won't be sorry!
Piper James
Since I first picked up the first book in the Milestone Mischief series, I've been a fan of Piper James.  As I have come to the final book in the spin off series, Red River Romps, I find myself hoping that she continues to write such fun and entertaining stories for us readers.  I'm rather sad to see this world and these characters go, but I'm excited to see what else she might have in store for us.  If you haven't read any of these books yet, feel free to look back at my other blog posts.  They are all well worth the read!
*****************
It Started with a Snap by Piper James
Just like the rest of this series, I was instantly invested in the story and the characters.  Not only did I already love this world, but I had high hopes for this particular couple and Ms. James did not let me down.  I am such a sucker for these types of romances, and with both Milestone Mischief and Red River Romps, I've been on cloud 9.
I love how each book continues on in the same world, but can also be read as a stand alone.  There are no cliffhangers, but you still get to sort of 'catch up' with previous characters with each new book that comes out.  I have to admit to being rather said that this is the final book in the series, though I'm also super excited to see what the author has in store for us next.
In this book, there are some tropes that I really love, including enemies to lovers.  I love when all that tension finally hits it's mark and in this story it was executed perfectly.  The fireworks were incredible and reading the romance of it all gave me butterflies in my stomach.
If you love a small town romance, enemies to lovers, and a great story with some spice, you're going to love this book and this whole series.  I highly recommend all the Piper James books!
Dual Perspectives
I tend to like books with a dual perspective, as long as it's done well.  As in, you can definitively tell when the POV has changed.  This was one of those books, but more than that, it was a dual perspective that we needed.  Not to get too much on a soap box here, but we, as a people, need to get better at seeing things through other people's eyes.  We need to open our minds and hearts to the struggles other people are facing.  And most importantly we need to be willing to truly SEE what is going on around us.  I think this book, along with other books like The Hate U Give, are paramount to getting us to this point.  The following is my review, but my words won't do this book justice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm Not Dying With You Tonight by Gilly Segal and Kimberly Jones

This was an amazing book and so important.  I loved the way it showed, through alternate points of view, what it's like in a situation like this as both a white person and a black person.  Though obviously the events are scary for both girls, different aspects hit differently depending on their background and understanding of what's happening.  The authors did a marvelous job of showing this through each girl's thoughts and behaviors.

The book also does an excellent job at showing how fast things can go from tense to riots and violence.  So much can go wrong so fast, and a majority of it is because one side refuses to see things from the other side's perspective.  I think that's the biggest point that Lena was trying to get across to Campbell.

I hope more people will start reading books like this and educating themselves through fiction.  While white people will never know what it's like to be black, we can open our minds and read stories from their point of view and by black authors and try to empathize and understand.  I think it's vital for our future.

Hate Doing It!

I absolutely HATE leaving less than a 4 star review.  I hate it, but I also really want to be honest with how I felt about what I read.  This book could have been better and I wanted my review to reflect the things I thought needed work.  But I still end up with this overwhelming sense of guilt for leaving anything negative that the author might see.  Let me know what you think, guys, was this worded ok?  Could I have done better with this review?

*******************

Every Breath You Take by Blair Babylon

I'm giving this book 3 stars, simply based on the length of time for me to get into the story.  By the time I was truly invested, the book was almost over.  There were several times I considered setting it aside and trying to come back to it later.

That being said, I'm glad I sort of powered through because at the end, I WAS invested and now I really want to read the rest of the series and see what's in store for Georgie and Alex!  I just wish a bit more background into Georgie's past was included with this book, or that it was a bit easier to understand what was happening.

One thing is, I did like the writing style.  There was a lot of descriptive language that kind of pulled you in and allowed you to really "see" what was going on.  I could definitely see myself really enjoying other books by this author, and the rest of this series especially.

ACOWAR

Do people refer to the sequels by the acronym as well?  I'm not even sure, but ACOWAR sounds pretty amusing in my head.  Especially with some of the content of this book!  (If you know, you know.)  Anyway, enough of my antics...  This book was SO good and I just can't even with myself for sleeping on this series for so long!  I'm on a waiting list for the next book, but in the meantime,  here's my review for book 3 in the ACOTAR series!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
I found myself more intrigued with this book than the previous two.  Not that they weren't good, but I think I really was held more captivated in this book and on the edge of my seat.  The things Feyre and Rhysand have to go through and what they must endure is a lot to take in.  There's also quite a bit of sacrifice here.
One thing that really sticks out to me in this book, and possibly it's because of bits and pieces I've picked up from BookTok, but I find it incredibly amazing how supportive that Rhysand is, even when he is also super protective of everyone around him...especially Feyre.  He still wants her to be involved and make her own choices and be strong in her own ways.  He's just the kind of guy you would want, or if you already have that type of guy (like I do,) he's the type of soulmate you would want for your children.
My heart broke and broke repeatedly in this book.  There were times where it was put back together and times that I don't know yet if it will recover.  I love that amidst all the action and plotting and war in this book, there are also very real emotions as well.
I definitely feel like I had been missing out on this series, and I'm so thankful for BookTok bringing it more attention.  That being said, fans of the first two books, or fans of fantasy romance or Fae books in general will probably love this book!
Scorned Women Society
I love the BookTok community so much!  This place has opened me up to new authors, new reading friends and I get book mail, y'all!  So, this book, along with the two others in the series were sent to me by the author and they are even signed!  Much love to Piper Sheldon for spoiling me like that.  I also really loved the book and am well on my way to finishing book two!  The following is my review for book one in the Scorned Women Society series!
************
My Bare Lady by Piper Sheldon
I "met" this author on TikTok and she was generous enough to send me a few of her books to read!  I fell in love with the covers, let me tell you!  Of course, it's the inside you want to hear about.
I was not disappointed.  This book started off strong and just got better as I turned the pages.  One thing I truly love is when an author tells you a song title and artist in their story so you can go listen as you read and feel as if you are there.  I got that a few times with this book and was so happy (and I got some new songs to add to various playlists on my Spotify!)  In addition to the musical descriptions, the author describes people and places in a manner that lets the reader truly see what she's seeing but not in a way that makes it dull to read.
I'm a sucker for a romance in which neither of them realizes how the other feels, that's what we get with this couple.  Each is afraid, in their own way, to truly let loose and let someone in that deep.  I also love how great the supporting characters are and I'm sure to love each tale of the Scorned Women Society as much as this first one.
Thanks again to the author for sharing her creations with me, I've already begun reading The Treble with Men and am hooked again!
Oh Rhysand
I loved the first book in the ACOTAR series, but I loved the second one even more!  As stated in my review below, I was confused after reading book one, as to why everyone on TikTok seemed to hate Tamlin so much, but book two makes it very clear.  I'd be curious to see if anyone liked him in book one even a little bit.  In any case, I get it now!  The following is my review for book two of the series.
*********************
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
What a thrilling follow up to the first book in the series.  I really enjoyed the character growth and development of Feyre and Rhysand.  I also loved learning more about the Night Court and the other characters we meet there.
I'll be honest, before reading this book, I wasn't sure why all the hate on TikTok for Tamlin, but I do get it now.  This story does show the difference between love and obsession.  I think the biggest difference between Rhysand and Tamlin, is the fact that Rhysand can want Feyre to be safe, but still want her to be herself.  He wants a partner, while Tamlin seems to want a pet.  And as with most wild things, Feyre did not do well in a cage.
I was not prepared for all the plot twists at the end of this book.  In fact, I was so shocked and enthralled, I had to start book three immediately!  I'm very anxious to see how the rest of this story plays out and am very thankful to my fellow BookTokers for putting me on this adventurous ride!
Return to a Favorite
 I love when authors give us a little fast forward epilogue at the end of a series.  Siobhan Davis has taken it one step further and given us a full novella to show us what's going on with the characters from her Sainthood series.  When I read, especially when I read a series, I tend to get seriously emotionally attached to characters.  This type of epilogue gives the feeling to the reader that these people continue to live on after the books are done.  It also gives us the opportunity to see where they are headed and where they've been since the end of their series.  It just makes me so happy!  The following is my review for Revere, the epilogue novella for the Sainthood series.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Revere by Siobhan Davis

I love that Siobhan Davis has given us more from the Sainthood world!  Getting to see where Harlow and the guys ended up and how they are doing is everything I didn't know I needed.  What's more, I love that we get a full novella instead of just an epilogue.  There is so much going on in Revere, and it's amazing to be able to sort of "check in" with some favorite characters.

While the main part of the story revolves around Lo and her guys, we get updates on other favorite characters as well through phone calls, or just the thoughts of the characters we are reading about.  Especially in a series of this nature, where almost everyone had it pretty rough, it's great to see positive updates on their lives.

Davis has this way of bringing her characters to life in such a way that the reader feels so connected and honestly feels so strongly about them, as if they were friends or even family.  I love that about her writing and I love that she gives us readers the chance to catch up with characters and see how their lives are going.

Carry On my Wayward Son!

While I am behind on the show, I've loved Supernatural since it first aired.  As life got busier and I went back to work outside the home, it became more difficult to keep up with it, but I intend to re-watch it all very soon.  This book has a character who not only loves the show, but designs her business after it and has even met the cast.  (Jealous of a fictional character here!)  I enjoyed the story, the characters were amazing, but the added Supernatural things just made me love this book even more.  I can't wait to read the rest of the series.  The following is my review for the first book in the Wayward Sons series.

**************

Starlee's Heart by Angel Lawson

I began reading this book (borrowed with Prime Reading) because I liked the cover and title. Little did I know that one of the reasons I liked the title would actually remain prevalent throughout the book. So, yes, Supernatural Fans... Wayward Sons is a reference to the show's theme song! There are more Supernatural gems to be found in the book as well.

As much as I loved and enjoyed the references and all, the main part of this book that I loved was the idea of finding your family, your circle. I don't agree with everything the mom in this story has done, and I think it's amazing that Starlee was able to find a connection with other teens who were feeling just as lost as she was. I really loved the grandmother in the story as well and how she was able to see things from both Starlee's and her mother's side and sort of be a buffer of sorts.

At the end, there's sort of a cliffhanger, so be aware of that. I'm actually very intrigued and can't wait to see what's going to happen next.

Christian Fiction

With summer rapidly coming to an end, I've found myself reading less so that I can get out of the house and go enjoy the last of my freedom!  Working for a school district has me acting like a teenager!  The kids and I have season passes to the local amusement park, so we've been spending a lot of time there.  We've also gone to the pool, on a summer vacation exploring caves, and on some shopping expeditions!  All of that means I come home exhausted and don't read very long before I fall asleep.  I'm hoping once work starts again, I will get more reading in, but I can't be mad at all the fun I've been having!

This book was different for me, as it was Christian fiction.  I enjoyed it, and knowing it's the beginning of the series has me wanting to continue with the rest. The following is my review for In Between by Jenny B. Jones.  It's the first in the Katie Parker Production series.

~~~~~~~~
In Between by Jenny B. Jones
 This was a very sweet book about finding yourself and learning to trust.  Not only that but learning who to trust and who not to.  There's also a lot to be said for forgiveness in this book as well as finding your faith.
Being the first in the series, I'm sure there is more learning to be had for Katie.  And while the story is mainly about her, I feel like her foster parents might have some things to learn as well.  I look forward to seeing how this little family grows and learns together.
If you enjoy YA coming of age books, and if you enjoy a Christian setting and exploration of faith, you will enjoy this book.
YA RH?
I haven't read a clean and very obviously YA RH book before this one.  I was kind of shocked because even the cover seemed very YA and innocent.  I enjoyed it though, and knowing it's the first book in the series makes me curious about the rest.
Are you into RH books?  I know that it's not for everyone.  I'll admit to being skeptical before I read my first in that trope.  Now, I can't seem to get enough!
***************
Dunam Defenders by Lux Carmine and Roxie Wilder
 I'm pretty sure this is the edition that I read, it was on Prime Reading, but apparently it either has a new title or it had a different title before.  Either way, from the synopsis I believe it's the same book.
I liked how each of the four main characters in this book had a clear back story and we knew where each was coming from.  I felt bad for Skylar and how hard she works to keep her family going.  Enter the boys and I think each boy has a depth of character often lacking in a YA male lead.  I liked how each had a passion and truly seemed to be a caring person.
Obviously, this led into a RH situation, but it was very clean and no spice or smut.  I'm very intrigued as to how the rest of the series will play out.
I believe the new title for this book is Her Christmas Miracles.
Red River!
I'm back in Red River with the second book in the Red River Romps series by Piper James.  This series is a spin off of her Milestone Mischief series, which I also loved.  I found this author on TikTok and let me tell you, I'm so glad I found my BookTok community there!  I've got loving support of other readers and authors.  I'm finding new books to read and love and new authors to follow.  I'm also seeing just true kindness and generosity in this community.  That's not to say there aren't some bad things or situations that arise, but as a whole this community has change my life for the better.  Quarantine and situations with money due to that had me down for quite awhile.  I am finally starting to feel like myself again after finding this amazing bunch of people.  Anyway, the following is my review of the 2nd Red River Romps book.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It Started With a Crush by Piper James

 For those who love a Single Dad Romance, this one is for you!  First of all, each and every book I've read by Piper James (and I think I've read them all) is absolutely delicious.  Filled with heart and steam and just excellent writing and storytelling.  I love the characters and the development each one gets.  Everyone has a backstory, a history that makes them who they are and it's so important to see that.  Another thing I just adore, is how all of these stories tie together in some way.  The Milestone Mischief series led us to the Red River Romps series and all of these characters somehow intertwine.  It adds a depth to the connection the reader feels when we can start a book and already feel like we know some of the characters.

In this story, we see Chase and Sage and how they end up meeting and connecting in ways they never expected.  I am a sucker for a single dad romance, I love seeing a good father end up finding love and happiness outside of their child.  I love the sassy and snarky conversations between Sage and Chase, and I love how supportive the surrounding characters (Sage's friends and Chase's brothers) are.  Daniel, Chase's son, is a total charmer as well and adds just the right amount of cute to the book.

I found myself laughing and tearing up and turning the pages until I literally couldn't keep my eyes open.  Already I can not wait for book three in this series.  If you haven't read any of Ms. James' books yet, I highly recommend getting started!  You don't have to read them in order, but if you're a tad OCD like me, make sure you start with the Milestone Mischief series!

Rock Star Romance

I love Rock Star Romance, or any kind of celebrity romance really... even a good sports romance fits the bill.  I've seen recently on TikTok that some people are extremely adverse to these tropes.  Well, to each their own!  I don't have to like everything my fellow avid readers like.  Just like they don't have to like everything I like.  The one criticism I have for the bookish community is our tendency to judge other readers for what they like and dislike.  Even if we both read the same book, we will take away something very different from it based on our own likes, experiences, etc.  So, here's my plea... let's stop being so judgmental and just agree to disagree on certain genres and tropes.  It's not going to hurt anyone to like different things.  That's kind of what makes us so beautiful!  That being said, here's my review!

***************

Music of the Heart by Katie Ashley

 If you love a good rock star romance, pay attention!  This book was one of the best Rock Star romances I've read.  It had heat, it had heart, and it instantly captivated me.  The main character, Abby, is so endearing!  I love that she's sweet and kind, but also knows how to hold her own after growing up with brothers.  Jake, on the other hand, took a minute to warm up to, but once you learn his background and struggles, you begin to see him in a new light.

I loved reading some of the lyrics to the songs in the story as well.  It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of talent and creativity that these authors have.  I hadn't read anything by Katie Ashley before, but she's impressed me and I intend to finish the Runaway Train series and then look for her other books as well.
